The team's efforts proved futile/came up short/were wholly inadequate, and their attempts/strategies/tactics only exacerbated/worsened/compounded the situation. It was a painful/disheartening/appalling display of incompetence, and it will likely haunt/plagued/shadow the organization for an eternity.
